St Anns Sneinton Blue 2 Cotgrave Colts Claret 3
4th November 2007

First half

Cotgrave got the game underway, but no one seemed to be awake this morning. St Anns were first to every ball, and it was clear that we were going to have to wake up quickly and get our act together. St Anns had lots of pace up front and countered very quickly to take the lead on 6 minutes. They went on to double the lead on 14 minutes to make it 2-0. Cotgrave came close minutes later when Keaton Powell crossed the ball in from the right wing, but Keenan Berry was denied by the crossbar. Cotgrave introduced new signing Will Robinson on 18 minutes who made an immediate impact in midfield. Cotgrave gained more possession as the game went on and started to look like they could go on and get something out of this game. A Keaton Powell goal kick cleared the St Anns midfield and Johnny Commins was there to take it round the defence and slot the ball past the St Anns keeper to make it 2-1 in the 22 nd minute. St Anns had a couple of chances just before half time, but some great defending by George Morris and Liam Hurworth kept the score at 2-1.

Half time St Anns Sneinton 2 – 1 Cotgrave

Second half

St Anns got the second half under way and again attacked the Cotgrave goal with pace, but Jake made a string of fine saves. Will Robinson started to dominate the midfield, and on 34 minutes, he found the back of the net to score his first goal for the Clarets on his debut. Another Keaton Powell goal kick found Will Robinson, and with his strength and determination, he shrugged off a couple of St Anns players and headed for goal and made it 2-3 on 38 minutes. The final couple of minutes were very tense as St Anns piled on the pressure to try to find the equaliser. Luke Williams, Zak Bemrose and Matthew Sheppard threw themselves at everything to deny St Anns. It was nail biting stuff in the last minute when Cotgrave conceded a corner. Matthew Sheppard managed to clear the ball away from danger, before the ref blew his whistle for full time.

Final Score St Anns Sneinton 2– 3 Cotgrave

Summary

Cotgrave didn’t play the football we have seen them play in recent weeks. This may be due to the half term break or the cold mornings we are starting to have. However, what was pleasing to see today was that players picked themselves up and battled after we went 2-0 down. Not many teams in this division will come back from 2-0 down to go on and win the game. So well done to everyone today for not giving up, and believing in themselves to go on and win the game. Look forward to seeing you all at training on Wednesday.

Fantastic performance today - battling back from 2-0 down showed the character of the team. They didn't give up and got what they deserved.

It was good to see a game where both sets of players enjoyed themselves. Excellent ref today as well (very fair and understanding) - looked very much like a younger (Sir) Jimmy Sirrel.
