Cotgrave Colts 2 Wollaton Hall Yellow 3
17th November 2007
YEL Cup

In this tight and exciting cup-tie Cotgrave ended up on the losing side - just.

Within two minutes of the kick-off an unfortunate error in the Cotgrave defence left a Wollaton forward with an easy tap-in goal. From the resulting kick-off Thomas Staples and David Young moved the ball down the right, the ball was fed into the middle where Jordan Cumberland finished with a good shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Cotgrave were now attacking well with Max Robertson finding space on the left wing and James Staples and Luke Black looking strong in the centre of the pitch. After thirteen minutes a superb Elliott Coulthard-Gaunt pass from the halfway line out through Cumberland who finished calmly to put Cotgrave into the lead.

The match was now end-to-end. Aidan Sheppard was battling well in midfield and Lewis Hopkinson looked lively on the right wing. However, with only a few minutes left to half-time Wollaton won a free-kick just outside the area. The shot was well saved by Nathan Burgin, but there was nothing he could do to prevent the rebound going into the net.

For the second-half Harry Normington switched to left back with Coulthard-Gaunt pushing into midfield. But Wollaton started the half on top, pushing Cotgrave back towards their goal. In the centre of defence Ben Halcro and James Staples were being forced to work hard and made several clearances, but the ball kept coming back and after six minutes of the half Wollaton took the lead for the second time with a shot high into the net from inside the area.

Cotgrave worked their way back into the game. Kris McCann and Matthew Hodgett were introduced but the clock kept on ticking and Cotgrave could not break through. In the final few minutes Cotgrave won a free-kick just outside the area, but the keeper was well positioned for Sheppard’s shot. Then with seconds left Thomas Staples drove into the area, the keeper came out and Staples was forced wide, he shot and the crowd held their breath, only to see the ball fire past the outside of the post.

A good match that could have been won by either team. On the day it was Wollaton who fully deserved to go through to the next round.
