Cotgrave Colts 0 AFC Vernon 3
29th September 2007

The last time these two teams met was in the cup two seasons ago. That day Vernon cruised to a 5-1 victory. Cotgrave have improved since then though and this time we was looking to give Vernon much more of a game. The opening stages of the first half was fairly even with both teams playing a high line and both teams looking to put the strikers through at early opportunities. Neither team was playing attractive football. Cotgrave was looking comfortable until a late arrival from a Vernon striker who had the pace to get on the end of the Vernon long balls and he was the difference between the two teams as he put the Cotgrave defence on the back foot. Cotgrave was struggling to get to grips with the long balls through the centre and found themselves 3-0 down in a crazy 5 minute spell. Cotgrave was battling all over the field, but seemed to lack the belief that they could get back into the game.

The second half saw Vernon start to play better football and really started to put the Cotgrave defence under pressure. The instructions to the midfield in the second half was to provide more support to the attack, which the lads should have done in the first half. When called upon, Olly Vickers in the goal was excellent. Cotgrave were restricted to counter-attacks. With 20 minutes gone of the half a Vernon player was sent off for swearing to the referee. This should have been a big boost to Cotgrave, but Vernon coped very well and deservedly finished the game with 3pts.

This was not a bad performance at all, and with more belief (and no crazy 5min spell) we could have perhaps got something from this game. We will have tough games every week, but this is the place we want to be.

i told the lads today that before the season started i was expecting more defeats than wins but after seeing how well we had performed i had changed my mind and now realised what a great team we have and we should fear no one and expect more this season. the lads seemed to take this on board and played great today. all over the pitch we battled and created chances against a very good vernon side. vernon showed their class in the final third of the pitch today and we know we have alot of work to do to match these top teams but with the team spirit we have we can build on every result and improve. well done lads and again a big thank you to all the help and support from all the cotgrave parents.

i think the 5 minute spell was a lucky break through as i thought the defence was tired. but in the second half we got stuck in alot more and there was some great saves from that keeper olly vickers. sometimes you have to play in positions you dont want to play in, but it is doing your best for the team.

Did you see things differently? Do you have anything to add? We will add feedback to the bottom of the report, but PLEASE refrain from personal criticism, whether it is players, referee, linesman, managers etc. If you do, then it will not be added. Try as much as possible to keep it positive.
