First match of the season in Division 1 was against a team that was promoted with us. The first half was fairly even with Cotgrave having more possession but Long Eaton having the better chances. Luke Haxby limped off with a calf strain after 10-minutes. The Cotgrave defence looked very strong with Tom Morley making his debut next to the new club captain Matt Brewis. When needed Ollie Vickers was out very quick. New signing Greg Halford, looked as though he'd been with this team for a long time, Greg had a great game and linked up very well with Ben Dunning. Half time came with the score at 0-0. Joe Baker had to shoot off at half time to be there for his parents getting married, Joe had a great first half and dominated the midfield. Cotgrave had not played any pre-season friendlies, so the second half could have been a struggle. The opposite happened as Cotgrave started to take control of the game and managed to take the lead after great play started by Morley at the back, he played the ball forward to Callum Clark, he did a an interchange with Jimmie Whitehead and Clarkie lifted the ball over the advancing keeper to make it 1-0 to Cotgrave. Cotgrave's second goal was a really well worked goal between Matt Brewis & Colin Randall, that ended up with Matt crossing a great ball into the box for Jimmie to get the goal his hard work deserved. The third goal was another good goal as Ryan Smith took the ball from Clarkie on the edge of the box before beating the Long Eaton defender and hitting a left foot shot into the bottom corner. Cotgrave were finishing the game playing 3 at the back due to injuries, but the lads were well up for it and finished the game strong. No-one could question Cotgrave's commitment today as every player gave 100%. Although I haven't included everyone in the report, there was plenty of times that players fought back for the ball giving the Long Eaton players no time to settle. Glen Dale's work rate was excellent. Jake Messenger & Laighton Powell never stopped running on the left side. Craig Saxelby hardly put a foot wrong, but when he did miss the ball once near the end, Craig turned and ran back to help out and was the player who still ended up clearing the danger. A couple of injuries at the end to Greg & Morley means we will have to put some extra thought and work, into the warm ups. |
Feedback: name: Richard Randall Involvement: Cotgrave Parent A good strong start to the season from all the lads out there today, we managed to keep Long Eaton down to only a few chances a good strong defence and if they got through Ollie was on hand to keep the ball out. 0-0 at half time the game was still wide open and as Long Eaton's manager told his team that we had not had any pre mach friendly games so we would tire in the second half but this proved to be wrong we kept it together and a good link up play between jimmie & Clarkie as Clarkie lifted the ball over the keeper to make it 1-0. The second came from a corner Colin made a run from the half way line across towards the corner flag was not picked up by Long Eaton played a short one two with Matty (captain) and crossed over for jimmie to head the ball home at the far post. TO finish the afternoon of a great strike from Ryan kept the ball low and the big keeper was unable to get down to the shot. All the lads played great football today and lets keep up the good work and the new boys slotted in well and looked like they had been with us for years. WELL DONE ALL |
