As we put the goals up at quarter to ten we did wonder if the match would go ahead today, the pitch was in perfect condition, but the grey sky loomed ominously above. We only had 8 players available today, with Jack, Harry & Owen all unavailable; with only one sub all of the boys played plenty of football and didn’t have too much time to think about the cold conditions. Our first decision was to reduce the match to 30 minutes so that the boys involved in the second match would not be waiting around so long. We also kicked off ten minutes early (before the rain came) which meant that our Referee Carl missed the start of the match!!! He also missed Cotgrave taking a very early lead when an excellent through ball from Josh found striker Charlie, who rounded the keeper to open the scoring on 2 minutes. Cotgrave continued to dominate the early stages with the midfield of Lewis, Liam and Thomas holding positions and creating a number of chances and Charlie made it 2-0 before half time. The second half was much tougher for us with Edwalton coming more into the game and testing our defence much more. Today’s win was built on a very strong defensive display with Josh and Kenny both playing extremely well, not just breaking up the opposition attacks, but also putting us on the attack. Our third clean sheet of the season, was certainly our best and took a lot of hard work from not just the defence but also midfielders running back to help tackle the opposition and both keepers James and Lewis James impressed today listening to the instructions to help out the defence and grew in confidence throughout the game. Kenny & Thomas thrived in the muddy conditions with tackles flying in and Robbie was a constant threat on the left side of midfield. After holding off Edwalton attacks we then swarmed forward in the last 5 minutes and created a number of chances. The Edwalton keeper making saves from Liam, Thomas and Robbie. The most exciting moment of the match saw our Player of Match Kenny collect the ball on the half way line and after dancing through the Edwalton midfield found himself in the opposition box with the ball still under his control. Encouraged to shoot by the management and claim his first goal, Kenny pulled back his fearsome left foot ready to shoot only to be crowded out by his own team mates !! Colts Captain Charlie blasted home from ten yards with a couple of minutes to go to complete his hat-trick and playing against some of his school friends, to make it 25 goals in just 12 games so far this season. The rain was getting heavier as the game ended and both sets of players deserve praise for such an entertaining game in wet and muddy conditions. Kenny was deserved Player of the Match but well done to all 8 players today for such a great effort especially keeping a clean sheet against a good Edwalton team, because that took a TEAM effort. |
