February 2008 |
Starting Squad: Adam in goal, Jacob and Luke in defence, James, Jordan, Luis, Harrison attack/midfield Substitutes: Kieran, Clarke, Luke, Liam, Ben Second to last match of the season today for the Under 8 team and we knew it would be a tough one against Keyworth United Green. Not counting losing to League winners Vernon, both teams were undefeated since September in the YEL Green Division. The teams drew 3-3 in December when they last met and both teams desperately wanted the win today and were contending for the League Runners’ Up position. Supporters turned up in their droves and my Dad counted 97 spectators when the match kicked off. Both teams started attacking from the off and were determined to collect the points. Jordan broke through the Keyworth defence and struck a great effort at goal which the keeper saved. Keyworth quickly regained the ball and passed a lovely ball through to their number 9 but this didn’t bother Jacob Hill who cleared the ball down the line to Harrison whose fast pace took him down the right for a cross to Luis who shot at goal which was saved. Keyworth were constantly dominating but Jordan put the Colts in the lead after blasting a free kick into the net half way through the first half. Brilliant Jordan! Luis Parkes battled like a boy on a mission and was a constant threat all over the pitch. Both teams continued to work their socks off, last weeks’ Man of the Match Luke Sissons produced another outstanding display today and together with Jacob they kept menacing Keyworth attacks at bay. A Cotgrave corner close to half time saw James Bennett put us 2-0 up with a header. Nice celebration James! Half time: Cotgrave 2 Keyworth Green 0 The boys started the second half pretty much the same as the first with pace, neat passing, skill and plenty of chances. However, a powerful Keyworth free kick which Adam had no chance of saving gave them the goal they were after. Cotgrave responded with a dangerous attack down the right wing from Harrison who delivered the ball into the net with his left (dodgy) foot again. He must have been practising!........... Could it be victory!!??? With time pressing on, a Keyworth corner was headed in past Adam in goal who was heard saying “I will not let another goal go past me in this game!” and he didn’t! Bless him. The final whistle eventually blew and a cheer went up from the supporters. Great performance boys. A win or a draw next week and you will get your reward. The support and cheers from the Cotgrave boys who didn’t get a kick today showed true team spirit. Brilliant. Well done Harrison who was Man of the Match but all the team worked hard and the quality of football from these 7 and 8 year olds amazes me. Keyworth didn’t let themselves down today and have a great team. Good luck in the Cup. Thanks to everyone who came to watch and cheer the boys on. WELL DONE COTGRAVE!!! |

Keyworth match report Cotgrave Colts 3:2 The Mighty Greens A game of real Football Well what can I say; looking at the boys faces after the game they looked gutted. Our first defeat in over 12 matches and it just showed that the mighty green boys were not used to that losing experience. We played a very good Cotgrave side today who had some terrific players and at times showed us how to play football. We seemed today to forget our normal passing game, defended too deep and forgot how to control the ball and look for that pass. The game started at a blinding pace and Cotgrave from the off attacked our goal, Ravo making some crunching tackles and letting the Cotgrave strikers know he was there. Cotgrave were awarded a free kick on the right hand side of the pitch and a fantastic shot followed finding its way into our goal beating poor old William, I don t think Van der Sar would have saved that. Matthew, Conor tried to lift the play and again Cotgrave were winning balls in our midfield and attacking our goal. They then had a super cross put over and a headed goal putting us 2-0 down. The half time whistle blew and the boys came over to the sideline not knowing what had hit them. Gareth and I tried to explain to them that they needed to re-group and go out there and play the game as they normally do. The second half started and immediately we started to give them a game; Camo winning the ball in midfield and a lovely ball through to Sam who ran at the Cotgrave goal only to be fouled. The boy brushed himself down and from 40 yards unleashed a shot that swerved, dipped, twisted and ended in the top right hand corner of the goal 2-1, and what a goal that was. The boys now had the wind between there legs and continued to press for that equaliser, then the unthinkable happened Cotgrave broke away and scored 3-1. To their credit the boys continued to fight back and with five minutes to go Matthew headed a goal 3-2. Could we get a draw? We pressed and pressed but it was no to be today and the final whistle blew; oh what a feeling looking at the boys faces they were gutted. But after 5 minutes of personal reflection I thought that if you would've said to me on the first game of the season that we would finish 3rd I would've taken it. What a season, What a great set of lads, What a great set of parents and most of all you boys should be so proud of yourselves. You have come on 110% and grown together as a team and you have continued to develop improving your all round football skills. |
Feedback: name: paul hill Involvement: Cotgrave Parent What a fantastic match to watch with two teams battling away for that runners up spot.HARRISON,JORDAN,LUIS AND JAMES attacked non stop from the first whistle to the last whilst JACOB AND LUKE were like brick walls in front of the keyworth forwards and as for ADAM in goal he was like a cat and last by know means least the subs who shouted their support all the match to their team mates. A big thank you has to go to the manager carl for his work with all of our boys (not bad for an assistant) One more big match sunday boys to finish the season off so lets make it a win |
Feedback: name: Sam (the jacket) Dowzell Involvement: Cotgrave Parent Yes, thank you Carl for the time and effort you have put in to developing the squad. It really is much appreciated and Harrison has come on in leaps and bounds (literally!) He is always so enthusiastic about training and match days and has made loads of friends. Well done mate. |
Feedback: name: Carl Bentley Involvement: Cotgrave Manager I would like to say a big well done to the whole squad, their attitude and focus towards this, the biggest game of the season, was nothing short of excellent. We tried to play good passing football when keyworth allowed us too. We won the game because the spirit of the team was to work as one unit. It was great to see the huge support for all the boys! A big thank you to all the parents for their support throughout the season! I feel so proud of what the boys have achieved this season, through hard work and their passion for the game. I would also like to thank Paul Hill for carrying my water bottles, i know it was a big task for him!!!! |
Feedback: name: lee hill (U7 Claret Manager) Involvement: Cotgrave Manager great result sunday and well deserved. i've seen this team a few times over the last two seasons and must say they have got the makings of being one of the best youth sides in nottingham, a lot of talent throughout. if my under 7s are half as good next season i will be happy. |
