East Leake Bantams 2 Cotgrave Colts 2
8th October 2006

Wow – what can I say about today’s game. Once again, I’m so proud of the team for their performance. Despite losing a goal in the first minute of the match, the lads showed so much determination, and eventually scored a well-deserved equaliser 5 minutes before the break; after some good passing in midfield, the ball broke to Keenan who broke clear of the East Leake defence and unleashed an unstoppable shot past the ‘keeper.

East Leake took the lead again in the first minute of the 2nd half, but again, the lads showed tremendous resolve, and continued to contest every ball, and what can only be described as a ‘wonder save’ by the East Leake ‘keeper denied them an equaliser. The fighting spirit and ‘never say die’ approach was evident in every player, and eventually, after a good period of pressure on the East Leake goal, the lads were rewarded with the equaliser in the final minute; Liam played a true captain’s part, and pushed high up the pitch to put pressure on the East Leake defenders who were trying to keep possession and play out time. Having robbed one of the defenders of the ball, he drove into the penalty box and crashed a shot high into the net past the ‘keeper.

Summary

The award of the weekly Man of the Match trophy was extremely difficult, as a case could have been made for any one of the 10-man squad. However, a decision had to be made, and I decided to give it to George for his superb defensive display.

Our next match provides us with a real test, against Wilford Mavericks, who have so far this season played 5 and won 5, and have only conceded 2 goals in the process. However, I’m confident that if we display the togetherness and determination that we have in the last 2 games, we’ll give them their toughest test to date.

Finally, I can’t end without giving a mention to the parents that lend their support week in, week out, which is invaluable to the overall success of the team. The weather at this time of year doesn’t really make standing on a touchline appealing, but you’re there regardless, and the team and I very much appreciate it, so thank-you.
